$BH/I=MW;](J As the world we live in becomes increasingly sophisticated technologically, and our lives accordingly rationalised, some educators have begun to recognise the value of focusing on such traditional communication skills as the telling of personal stories. In the foreign language learning classroom storytelling not only gives learners opportunities to organise extended discourse, and develop their use of tenses, but may, if done in the right way, help them hone a valuable communication skill. However an important question for developing such skills with language learners is the kind of activity and the degree of input that is provided. This presentation reports on a comparative study of three parallel classes of (about 30) university students taught using three kinds of task repeated over five weeks between a pre and post test consisting of a sample of all three task types. One class focused on retelling short written stories, another attempted to retell episodes of Charlie Chaplin$B!G(Js silent movie Modern Times and a third group were coached to tell their own personal stories working on a different theme each week. The presenter highlights improvements made between the pre and post tests in terms of fluency accuracy and complexity on the three tasks, but also considers evidence of qualitative progress in the ability to tell a convincing story. Finally the presenter discusses the strengths of the different task types and suggests how they might be integrated effectively into a teaching curriculum.
